“Careless Whisper” by George Michael – Review

Careless Whisper by George Michael - Review

With its elegant saxophone introduction and passionately composed lyrics, “Careless Whisper” by George Michael is a famed song from the 80s that has many dramatically glancing outside a window on especially melancholic days. While this song was not a favorite among George Michael due to his construction of the song, the soothing saxophone and fervent lyrics personally hold a different interpretation for me. Of course, I have to wonder why this wonderfully composed song is used differently from its original creation.

“Careless Whisper” made its debut in 1984, and made No.1 on musical charts in 25 countries. However, in a 2009 interview with the Big Issue, George Michael questioned why the song had an impression on people and presumed that many people have cheated on their partners, leading to an emotional attachment with the song. Well, in my opinion, that is not the reason. “Careless Whisper” perfectly embodies an ill-fated love, and I personally do not envision it as a narrative for cheating partners. When faced with the overdramatic view of events in my life, the song sadly represents the loss of a potential lover due to certain circumstances. Although George Michael is no longer with us, I hope my interpretation to his puzzled question, “Is it because so many people have cheated on their partners? Is that why they connect with it?”, is a proper response. No, George Michael, I did not cheat on past lovers, I just have bad luck with love.

As stated above, the song is about a man who was caught cheating on his partner. And with disregard to George Michael’s composition of the song, the sexy saxophone introduction is facetiously added to YouTube clips of serious movie and television scenes. The saxophone solo in the beginning is overdramatic, yet masterfully composed to the point that it can be virtually used in anything. The saxophone solo is not just the sound of tragedy for melancholic times, it is also the sound of humor for dramatic moments. When is it ever a bad time to listen to “Careless Whisper”? Whether one listens to the song as a dedication to someone else, after a heartbreak, or even as motivation for an important moment, “Careless Whisper” is too phenomenal to be left at its original and tragic composition.
